Chennai: Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Southern Region proposed the formation of the Automotive Sector Group to UNIDO at a meeting organised by the CII along with UNIDO in Chennai.

Mr J N Amrolia, Chairman, International Business Promotion & Networking Task Force, CII - Southern Region, during the interaction mentioned that over 70% of its members are MSMEs and Engineering service providers who are suppliers to the Automotive sectors in the region. In this context, the formation of the automotive sector Group in the Southern Region would pave the way for the management of the good initiatives and projects that would come through CII - UNIDO partnerships.
Mr G K Moinudeen, Head of the Tamil Nadu Technology Development & Promotion Centre proposed the maintenance of the Sub-contracting and partnership exchange using its expertise in the automotive sector and with the CBI of Netherlands. He also explained that the Technology promotion requires the regular meeting of the research and development heads of the automotive sector companies and documenting them and passing the technological progress to the SMEs in the region.

Mr Bruno Valanzuolo, Chief Technical Adviser of the consolidated project for the SME development explained that the Italian funded  3 million Euro project focused on the Auto components, leather and footwear sector. He also explained that there are three components in the project  - cluster development, mutual credit Guarantee schemes, Investment and technology promotion. The major component was the Investment and technology promotion Component where the Associations in Chennai, Pune and Delhi are trained to collect information from the members for the sub-contracting and partnership exchange for business match making.

He also mentioned that the project has trained over 15 associations in Chennai and another 15 in Pune on Investment and technology project proposals writing and evaluation. He introduced Ms Santa Mole, Director Italian Cooperation who is the representative of the donor (Italian Government).

Speaking about the co-operation with UNIDO, Mr Sujith Haridas, Regional Director, CII - Southern Region mentioned that CII was one of the first movers in the cluster development programmes in India.  CII in 2007 signed a co-operation agreement to profile the auto component companies for the consolidated project for the SME development in India. It has profiled about 210 companies in Pune and 200 companies in NCR.  The Tamil Nadu Technology Development & Promotion Center (TNTDPC), a joint initiative of CII and Government of Tamil Nadu profiled another 100 medium companies in Chennai.

He also mentioned that CII International Desk has a co-operation to write and evaluate the investment and technology demand projects for the Partners search by UNIDO. Earlier CII team had written investment project proposals for 20 companies using UNIDO software. Now It has prepared 20 technology search requests by the member companies to UNIDO. He said that the wide network base of UNIDO would help in identifying appropriate technology providers for the members.

Mr S Sivaganam, Director MSME Development Institute explained how they had partnered with the UNDIO ITP division of the consolidated project for profiling about 150 auto component companies in AIEMA and 100 leather and footwear companies. He mentioned that it was an interesting experience for MSME DI to get closer to the companies through their Engineers.
